Hurricane Bill brought the WHR to a stand on the 29th August 2009. Flooding from neighbouring farmland filled the cutting under the road bridge with over 500mm of water and No. 87 nearly had it's fire put out. No 143 retrieved the train over one hour later and towed it back to Waunfawr. The line stayed shut beyond Waunfawr for the rest of the day. About 50mm of rain fell that morning and many roads were flooded around Snowdonia.
