An unusual aspect of Sans Pareil, the firebox and chimney are at the same end of the locomotive, as seen here at the NRM 'Locomotion' Shildon on 8th October 2012. Built by Timothy Hackworth in 1829 to compete in the Rainhill Trials, the locomotive burst a cylinder, and Stephenson's Rocket won the competition. Later used on the Liverpool & Manchester and the Bolton & Leigh Railways, it was later used as a stationary engine at a colliery until 1863, and preserved in 1863.
