British Rail Class ES1 No. 1 on display within the NRM 'Locomotion' Shildon, on 8th October 2012. Commissioned by the North Eastern Railway in 1902, the steeplecab design locomotives were derived from an American design, designed from the start for both third rail and overhead power. Utilised as such on the Newcastle Quay branch, the locomotives used third rail power in the tunnels, and overhead on the remainder of the line.
