LNWR Improved Precedent Class 2-4-0 No. 790 Hardwicke stands on display at the NRM 'Locomotion' Shildon on 8th October 2012. Designed by F.W. Webb, 166 of these locomotives were built at Crewe in batches between 1887 - 1897, with further additions in 1898 and 1901. On 22nd August 1895 No. 790 took just 2 hours 6 minutes to complete the 141 miles between Crewe and Carlisle, setting a record of 67.1 mph during the 'Race to the North'.
