When the Edinburgh - Glasgow push-pull service began in 1971 there was a shortage of modified Class 27s leading to the use of Class 25 and 37 locomotives. On 15th May 1971 ,Class 37 No. D6857 passed Saughton Junction with a Glasgow Queen St - Edinburgh Waverley service being worked in top n tail mode with a Class 27 at the rear.
