This was a near fatal disaster. Whilst travelling at high speed on the 06:55 Birmingham New St-Glasgow Intercity Class 86 No. 86213 Lancashire Witch struck a dislodged Insulator on the catenary at Clifton south of Penrith and it completely removed the centre windscreen between the driver and a traction inspector and dislodged the door between the cab and equipment compartment resulting in a 2.5 hour delay in the arrival at Carlisle. The resultant damage is evident after removal of EWS Class 37 No. 37042 which dragged the train from Clifton to Carlisle on 3rd December 1997.
