As DRS has grappled with traction shortages through the RHTT season, one solution has been the diversion of the daily Carlisle - Crewe engineers working away from the usual route via the Settle & Carlisle line to operate via the WCML, thus allowing the use of electric traction in the form of a class 88. On 19 November 2021, DRS class 88 no. 88007 Electra heads into the loop at Carnforth North Junction with the 12.44 Carlisle Yard - Crewe Basford Hall comprising a loaded rake of ballast hoppers.
