LNER Class A4 No. 60009 Union of South Africa climbs through Kirkby Stephen in the teeth of an easterly gale on the Up Cumbrian Mountain Express on 30th March 1984. This was one of its first trips over the S&C in preservation but it was not the first time it had travelled this way because it was the loco heading the Up Flying Scotsman which was diverted over the S&C for a couple of memorable days in 1948 when the ECML was washed out in the Grantshouse Area and which I was privileged to withness at Skipton.
