British Rail Type 4 (Class 46) No. 46012, previously 149, stands in the centre road between platforms 8 and 9 awaiting the arrival of a northbound cross country which it will take forward as far as Birmingham New Street, No. 46012 was withdrawn in July 1980 and was the first Class 46 to go under the cutting torch at Swindon Works in October 1980. Just coming into view is an unidentified Class 47 heading for the oil distribution Depot at Theale, while behind No. 46012 is another unidentified Class 47 which was the Reading station pilot loco.
