Designed by Brush Traction, Class 89 Co-Co No. 89001 was built at Crewe in 1986. It hauled a number of special charter trains including the Mallard 50th Anniversary special in 1988. Following a serious failure, it was withdrawn in July 1992. Subsequently purchased by GNER, it supplemented the Class 91 fleet, returning to service in 1997. After a further failure in 2000, it was again withdrawn and stored out of use. In 2006 after an appeal, it was purchased by the AC Locomotive Group and resided at Barrow Hill. In December 2021, the ACLG agreed a partnership with Locomotive services Ltd who are planning to restore the loco for use on charter trains. 89001 is pictured at the Ilford TMD Open Day on 20th May 1989.
