The first day of public HST operation on the Western Region was on 4th October 1977, but there was little sign of change as 'Western' No. D1009 Western Invader left Paddington on a service to Paignton, passing Class 52 No. D1068 Western Reliance and Class 47/4 No. 47488 awaiting their next duty.
