Now plying its trade around the East Midlands for East Midlands Railway, Class 170 No. 170201 was at the time of the photograph leased by Transport for Wales as a stop gap waiting on the order for Class 197 DMUs to be built. Here, the Turbostar unit is pictured in platform 0 at Cardiff Central, waiting to form a service to Ebbw Vale. These units were at the time operating most of the services to Ebbw Vale, Maesteg and Cheltenham Spa.
