Before the working was altered to run via the Severn Tunnel and Charfield, Class 50 diesel electric No. 50023 'Howe' departs from Platform 4 at Gloucester on 14th July 1985 with 1S61, the 07:45 Cardiff Central - Glasgow Central/Edinburgh service. The loco was new from English Electric as No. D423 in May 1968 and later gained the distinction of being the first member of the class to be out-shopped in both the new BR blue large logo and Network SouthEast liveries. It was withdrawn in October 1990 and scrapped by Booth-Roe of Rotherham during April 2003. The canopy at this end of Platform 4 has only recently been demolished.
