During the early 1980s SR were using flexible combinations of 4-car driving trailers 4TCs with various forms of motive power on their longer trains on the LSWR main line. In this case 4TC Nos. 432 and 429 are being propelled at some speed by a powerful 4REP EMU No. 3014 on 18th October 1981 on a down express near Pirbright Jcn. Later on flexibility was discarded and fixed formations for passenger units became the norm across BR. However the electric motors of the 'locomotive' 4REPs found re-use in the Wessex Express Class 442 stock.
