Class 40 No. 40106, in BR green livery, stabled in Guide Bridge sidings on Sunday 19th March 1978. One of only 20 Class 40s built at BR Darlington Works as No. D306 it was delivered to Crewe North MPD in October 1960 and renumbered as No. 40106 under TOPS during March 1974. From 1973 to 1983 its home was Longsight MPD Manchester and No. 40106 had the distinction of being the last BR green main line diesel. Being vacuum braked-only was not a good omen for longevity and No. 40106 was withdrawn from Longsight MPD in April 1983. Privately purchased for preservation and initially housed on the Great Central Railway No. 40106, now renumbered back as No. D306, can be found today on the Nene Valley Railway.
