British Railways operated 2 Ruston & Hornsby 4wDM's on a 2 foot narrow gauge railway inside the Central Materials Depot at Chesterton Junction Permanent Way Depot north of Cambridge station. No. 85049, built in 1956, and No. 85051, built in 1957, both passed into preservation in 1986 and are seen working on the Derbyshire Dales Narrow Gauge Railway at Peak Rails Rowsley South Station on 26th September 2009. No. 85049 subsequently moved to the Mountsorrel Heritage Centre alongside the Great Central Railway in 2017.
