A 21st April 1976 general view of the terrain through which Brunel chose to drive his 'atmospheric' railway in South Devon, regardless of the steep gradients involved. An unidentified Western Class with a down express is about to pierce the hillside at Dainton tunnel after negotiating the gradient - peaking at 1 in 36 in spite of having been eased by the sinuous route taken through Stoneycombe Quarry, the spoil tips of which can be seen above the trees.
