GWR provided a cutoff for non-stop expresses on the West of England main line to avoid the twin junctions at Westbury causing delays at busy times. An unidentified HST is speeding by on the cutoff several hundred yards southeast of the station site on 10th April 1982. Dominating the view however are the northern slopes of the Salisbury Plains with the Westbury white horse unmissable on the sheer face just below the Iron Age fort of Bratton Camp. Its characteristic twin ditch and bank defences interrupt the smooth profile of the downs.
