Class 37 No. 37041 runs through the south junction with the Harwich branch at Manningtree with a newspaper van train heading for the London area on 1st May 1982. The box here looks unusual - wider at the base and tight to the down Ipswich line and with the upper operating section looking set to slide off its brick base. The likely explanation is that the solid brick base is a wartime addition to protect the interlocking mechanisms in the lower section from blast damage. Over the years the two independent structures seem to have developed different opinions on the vertical.
