The morning train from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh waits in the platform for the Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness train, approaching from the west, on 3rd August 1978. Both are hauled as always by a Class 26 although the exact identities are unknown. Little has changed at the station since the end of steam in the early 1960's with semaphore signalling still controlling movements. Achnasheen was the normal crossing point for all scheduled passenger services at this time and a Royal Mail Post Bus would attend the station three times a day when the trains met in order to exchange post and parcels to and from outlying villages for many miles around.
