In the final weeks of BR steam, Stanier Class 5MT 4-6-0's No. 45231 and No. 44971 keep company at Lostock Hall MPD on 20th July 1968. 45231 was new from Armstrong Whitworth in August 1936 as LMS No. 5231. 44971 was new from Crewe Works in April 1946 as LMS No. 4971. Both were withdrawn in August 1968, 44971 being scrapped and 45231 surviving into preservation. It is currently owned by Bert Hitchin and is main line certificated.
