In the summer of 1991 and with political unrest still prevalent in South Africa, preserved A4 No. 60009 temporarily operated on the main line as long scrapped classmate No. 60027 'Merlin'. On one of her final appearances in this guise on Wednesday 4th September 1991 she is seen leaving Crewe Station with a North Wales Coast Express charter for Holyhead. No. 60009 regained her 'Union of South Africa' nameplates just over a fortnight later on 19th September 1991.
