In Sofia major road reconstruction is currently taking place in many locations with a view to ease the chronic traffic problems that occur across the city during the busiest times of the working day. One example is that pictured here. Bulevard Rozhen is a major route out of the city running northbound through the district of Iliyantsi which often becomes grid-locked during rush hour. This view shows a substantial area that has been cleared to re-route the northern part of the road and take traffic directly onto the new ring road/motorway that circumnavigates the northern boundary of the city. This major project has affected the operation of Tram Routes 11 and 12 that run to and terminate at Iliyantsi. This is the scene on 18th October 2024 at the penultimate stop on the line, ul.K.Blagoev tram stop. What we see here is the installation of the new platforms and the first sections of new track. Iliyantsi railway station and yard is located about one kilometer off to the right of this image. The grey poles in the distance mark the location of the new turning loop and terminus. During the construction period all tram services are terminating four stops short at the Hyunday Balgariya stop/loop.
